Is EC for us…?

How to stay true if you follow a gentle parenting approach.

If like me, your parenting style tends to align with respectful and gentle parenting approaches then you may be wondering whether potty training or EC is the right thing for you and your baby or toddler.

From my experience,  I have found EC to be the gentlest approach to toileting - especially if you focus on the communication side of it. It is true that we can get caught up in "catching" pees and poos and feel frustrated when the baby refuses to use the potty when we offer it. You take the nappy off to reveal a dry nappy, you hold the baby over the toilet - and she arches her back and straightens her leg in protest, then proceeds to pee over the changing mat two minutes later.  I've been there myself and it can be so frustrating! If that ever happens, take a moment to breathe in and try to accept where you both are at this moment. EC is a journey, not a race. Give yourself a pat on the back for responding to her needs (remember the communication side of things?) and see if there's anything you need to change in your pottying routine.
